Rehabilitation of a Balanced Cantilever Bridge: Addressing Severe Distress in Bridge Structures
Adverse weathering and ageing had caused significant deterioration to a balanced cantilever bridge, raising safety risks and necessitating immediate remedial action.
Bridging the Gaps
We adopted a systematic series of targeted interventions, which began with thorough inspections. We identified issues such as cracking, concrete degradation, corrosion, and poor performance of existing bearings. We adopted a multi-faceted approach to address these challenges:
- Repairing Damaged End-Diaphragm: Damage in bearings had lad to partial tilting of the superstructure on one side, resulting in diagonal cracks in the bridge’s end-diaphragm. These cracks caused by tilted bearings were stitched using dowel bars and low-viscous epoxy grout injected along the cracks to restore tensile strength. The member was then jacketed with steel plating process to restore the structural integrity.
- Spalling & Delamination Treatment: We addressed spalling and delamination with Polymer-Modified Mortar (PMM) process.
- Bearing Maintenance: To address tilted rocker and roller bearings, we ensured smooth operational functionality through proper positioning, cleaning surfaces with water-jet, applying anti-corrosive coating to corroded sections with zinc-rich primer, and lubricating with graphite grease.
Overcoming Challenges, Delivering Excellence
The project encountered logistical complexities, including the replacement of scaffolding with hanging platforms due to the high flow of the perennial river, ensuring worker safety and avoiding hindrances during unfavorable weather conditions.
Throughout the project lifecycle, we ensured strict adherence to NHAI standards to ensure the safety of personnel and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Despite complex challenges, the rehabilitation project was successful in restoring the bridge to its optimal structural integrity — well equipped to meet operational demands and withstand future challenges effectively.
This project demonstrates our ability to execute intricate rehabilitation efforts and specialized bridge rehabilitation projects with precision and safety
